Bright and early Wednesday Dec. 4, nearly 20 members of the Wiarton & District Chamber of Commerce gathered at the Wiarton Century 21 In-Studio Realty office for a breakfast with the mayor event. This networking event gives members of the community an opportunity to learn more about the on goings of the municipality and to communicate directly with Mayor Janice Jackson. At the December meeting Jackson was joined by South Bruce Peninsula economic development officer Danielle Edwards.
Jackson began by discussing the budget deliberation process. Jackson explained that it is a lengthy process with “committees and departments having to submit their budgets to council in early October”. She also explained that the municipality has financial obligations to Bruce County; “we pay $7 million dollars to the county right off the top.”
The group also discussed the importance of residential growth throughout the municipality. Nearly all were in agreement that residential growth will be instrumental in driving retail, restaurant and industrial growth in the area. “Senior housing, such as the development in Sauble Beach will have a tremendous impact on our community,” said Jackson. Some members of the group noted the development process can be challenging to navigate, with frustration with red tape and confusion between the county and the municipality. Edwards explained that she is available to assist. “Interested parties should access the ‘pre-consultation’ form on the Town website and submit any drawings or plan proposals. Then we can work together through the planning process.”
The group discussed plans for the Big Dig planned for Berford Street in Wiarton beginning in 2020. There was much conversation about the plans that were presented at the Nov. 27 meeting. Chamber president Paul Deacon encouraged attendees to participate in the future public meetings that town and the engineering firm R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited will be holding.
Before long it was nearly 9 a.m. and it was time for the group to disperse, everyone left with a full stomach thanks to Laura Lisk and her team at Wiarton Century 21 In-Studio. The Wiarton & District Chamber of Commerce organizes a Breakfast With The Mayor three to four times per year.
