Julian Smith participated in a US Super Tour event this weekend at Craftsbury, Vt., with the best skiers in North America in attendance. On Friday, the men lined up for the 1.5-kilometre classic sprint qualifier. Smith finished sixth in a time of 3:21.34. Only the Top-30 qualified for the quarterfinals where Smith finished second to earn a berth into the semifinals. Although he slid to the back of his heat in the semis, he fought hard into s second-place finish and qualified for the finals. The six fastest men left standing lined up for the fourth and final race of the day. Smith raced fast and smart and finished with a silver medal performance and the prize money. On Saturday, the men raced a 10-kilometre skate race. Smith placed 33rd in a time of 27:15.34. Smith’s next set of races are Jan. 30 – Feb. 2 in Mont Saint Anne. Ice Hawks win silver at Orangeville tournament
The Owen Sound Shannon Deckers of Remax Ice Hawks peewee B club won their first game of the Orangeville Sweetheart Tournament 3-2 over West Oxford. Maya Beirnes scored the winner with a second left on the clock in the first period. Ryann Seaman and Grace Madill had the other goals all in the first period. Sarah VanDrunen and Aimee Dubosq got the win in net. The Ice Hawks took game two against the Clearview Ice Cats 3-2. Cali Hill opened the scoring for Owen Sound. Natalie Book scored in the third period. Clearview got a quick one back and Ryann Seaman scored the game-winner minutes later. Dubosq played the first and third in net while VanDrunen played the second period. In the final round-robin game against the Stratford Aces, Natalie Book and Sarah Cowan scored. Dubosq and VanDrunen combined for the 2-0 shutout. With the win, the Ice Hawks clinched first seed and a trip to the semifinals on Sunday. In the semifinal against the TCDMHA Rebels the Ice Hawks won 3-2 in a thriller. Sarah Cowan scored the first and third goals for Owen Sound and Avery MacDonald had the other. Dubosq played the first and third periods and VanDrunen played the second. In the championship game against the Mount Forest Patriots the Ice Hawks ran out of gas losing 5-0 but winning the silver medal.
Midget Jr. Attack split playdown games
The Owen Sound Subaru Junior Attack minor midgets split a pair of OMHA Playdown games on the weekend. On Sunday at the Lumley-Bayshore the Junior Attack downed Burlington 3-2 in overtime. Cole Gowan and Tyson Morrison scored in regulation while Joey Ackert scored in overtime. On Friday in Hespeler Owen Sound fell 2-0.
