Julian Smith competed in North America’s largest loppet (long-distance cross-country skiing race), the Birkebeiner, with over 10,000 participants last week.
A field of 3,085 men raced from Cable, Wisc. to Hayward Wisc. on Feb. 22. Smith finished the 51-kilometre course in 2:05:51 and placed 19th overall – fourth-place in his age category (18-24).
At the four-kilometre mark of the race, the skiers participated in a mid-race sprint. Smith won the sprint and took home the $500 prize.
Earlier in the week, Smith qualified for the 1.5-kilometre classic sprint final and finished 5th in a time of 3:35.05.
Smith has now returned to Thunder Bay training and catching up on school work. He trains at the National Team Development Centre and is a student at Lakehead University.
